Hazard Heroes
Dangerous Goods Training Experience

The Challenge

Dangerous Goods training is often compliance-driven, text-heavy, and quickly forgotten.

This created:

  • Low engagement with critical safety content

  • Poor knowledge retention

  • Limited confidence in real-world handling situations

The challenge was to transform mandatory training into something that was:

  • Engaging, memorable, and behaviour-driven

  • Without losing regulatory accuracy

My Approach

  • Designed a gamified learning experience using Articulate Storyline

  • Created a cast of “Hazard Heroes” characters, each representing key roles and risks

  • Developed interactive scenarios based on real-world dangerous goods situations

  • Used Storyline variables and triggers to:

  • Track progress

  • Unlock content

  • Drive decision-based outcomes

  • Introduced a points and reward system to reinforce engagement

  • Built a visual, animated world to make complex safety concepts accessible and memorable

  • Focused on learning through interaction and consequence, not passive content

What I Delivered

  • Full end-to-end learning experience design

  • Custom gamified Storyline build

  • Character-led narrative structure (Hazard Heroes™)

  • Interactive scenarios with branching logic

  • Use of variables to:

  • Track learner decisions

  • Trigger feedback and progression

  • Personalise the experience

  • Reward mechanics including:

  • Points

  • Progress indicators

  • Completion certification (“Handling Hero”)

  • Visually rich environments (lab, warehouse, office scenarios)

Impact

  • Significantly increased engagement with mandatory training

  • Improved retention of dangerous goods handling principles

  • Stronger learner confidence in identifying risks and making decisions

  • Shift from “tick-box compliance” to active participation

  • Created a scalable model for future gamified training
